I love discovering new subscription boxes so when I was approached by Scentful about their monthly perfume boxes I was very keen to give it a try.
What is Scentful?
Scentful is a new subscription box that launched around mid 2020 that focus on bringing you two surprise fragrances each month to try.
They come in a little box with 2 x 5ml and can last approximately 1 month (with 4-5 sprays a day).
The boxes can be tailored for fragrances for women and aftershaves for men. In addition you can also gift subscription boxes to friends and family.
How does the subscription work?
The great thing is you don’t need to be locked into a year long subscription and you can cancel at any time. If you just want to give it a try you can sign up for 1 month only but there is also an option to go with a 3 or 6 month plan.
The prices starts from £13.95 a month (and the price decreases if you choose the longer plans) and includes a range a designer brands from Chanel, D&G, Dior, Tom Ford, Versace, Jimmy Choo, Armani, YSL and more.
This subscription includes free UK delivery and comes in a protective jiffy bag. You have until the last day of the month to order a box for the following month. You will then receive it once it’s sent to you on the 7th.
I got the October subscription sent to me and it comes in a sturdy cardboard box and houses the 2 perfume vials very securely so you don’t have to worry about it leaking or breaking during delivery. I also think its an ideal box to repurpose for jewellery etc when you’re done with it.
The little vials have the brand and fragrance name imprinted on it and it comes with a secure cap and has a good spray. It also comes with a little booklet that has a nice description of each fragrance (very useful as I’m not good at describing scents in terms of top notes and base notes ).
I do like my floral scents though and the Jimmy Choo Fever is a really nice discovery and not one I would’ve tried otherwise. Its strong and long lasting and 2 sprays can last me a full day since its an eau de parfum (as compared to the weaker eau de toilette). I’ve sprayed it on my clothes before and could still smell hints of it 2 days later. I would actually buy the full bottle of this once I’ve used up some of my other full size perfumes.
I don’t know much about Thierry Mugler as a perfume brand but their Angel Muse is interesting. Not the typical scent I would go for and what I would associate as a man’s cologne but I like it enough to wear it on occasion when I want something a bit different. I just have to be careful with this one as I find it can be overpowering if you overdo it and the scent lingers for a long while so I only do 1 spritz of this.
What I think of Scentful?
I’ve tried plenty of beauty subscription boxes before but for some reason never thought of one for fragrances and think it’s a great idea. You will never know the fragrance in advance so it can be a nice little surprise on your doorstep each month and allows you to test a variety of perfumes from high end brands without spending the luxury price tag for a full bottle.
I have my favourite staple perfumes but I also like to regularly discover new fragrances. However this can be very expensive to do and the scent you think you liked when you tried in store can sometimes be very different once you get home. Some people find once they begin using it regularly it can start feeling too overpowering or the scent isn’t quite what they thought. Oftentimes, the particular fragrance might not work well with your body chemistry and the scent has changed. Or in other cases you could be disappointed to find it isn’t as long lasting as you thought.
There are many reasons why you might end up thinking that the £70+ you dropped on a bottle of perfume was a waste of money. That’s why I think a perfume subscription box is a great idea. The fact you get 5ml to try is sufficient to use consistently for a period of time to figure out whether it works for you and then whether it’s worth paying the price for a full bottle. I also enjoy the 5ml compact size and can easily throw it in a bag and head out the door.
Scentful allows you to discover brands and perfumes you wouldn’t have otherwise discovered, and in the comfort of your own home. It can be very overwhelming in department stores when there are tons of options in front of you and you don’t know where to look. You end up just defaulting to a brand you like or have awareness of, or being influenced by the person on the shop floor promoting the latest release. Scentful will hand-pick and make the decisions for you and you just have to give them a try!
On the downside, I can see how some people would not like the idea of not knowing what they are going to get each month. Fragrances are so specific to people you could end up with 2 perfumes you dislike in a month.
However that is the risk I feel you take with any type of subscription box service and you can’t expect to like 100% everything. On the flipside, you can at least rule out scents/brands you absolutely don’t like and you can even gift the ones you don’t use to friends or family.
Overall, I’m really happy a subscription box like this exist! I would recommend Scentful especially for those that love perfumes and discovering new ones.
