REVIEW: ION-Sei Electric Toothbrush + GIVEAWAY!

To preface this review, and to give some backstory, apart from skincare, having good oral hygiene and eye care are two of my biggest concerns. I always make sure that I attend my regular dentist/optician checkups because otherwise I tend to get paranoid about it! Have you ever had a dream about your teeth falling out or going blind? Terrifying!

Thankfully, my teeth have always been quite good. Apart from having braces as a teenager for a couple years, I’ve had no other major teeth/gum issues. I don’t have any fillings, cavities etc. and my wisdom teeth have all grown in well.

Since I got my first Oral-B electric toothbrush around the age of 11 or 12, I’ve never gone back to a manual toothbrush since and don’t think I could because electric is so much more effective. In the last few years however, I have been feeling disgruntled with Oral-B as I’ve had to replace it many times and my teeth health wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be. I just felt like I needed something ‘more’ but wasn’t sure what.

Then at the start of this year, Lisergy Consulting (who represent the ION-Sei Electric Toothbrush by Sanyei (Japan), in the UK), reached out to me asking if I wanted to try this newly launched, revolutionary toothbrush.

Its immediate selling point to me was its unique patented technology generating ions, which helps to inhibit plaque build up and prevent gum disease by controlling the bacteria that causes it.

(ION-Sei has been highly commended in the Best Dental Product category of GQ Grooming Awards 2020, won 2 silver awards in the European Product Design Awards 2019 and also is a finalist for the Pure Beauty Global 2019).

I was so intrigued and excited to try this. This seemed to be the ‘something more’ I wanted but didn’t know I was looking for in regards to taking care of my teeth.

So now I’ve rambled on, let’s get to the good stuff you need to know about ION-Sei and then there will be a giveaway at the end!

WHAT MAKES ION-SEI SPECIAL?

ION-Sei electric tooth brush with patented ionic toothbrush

ION-Sei isn’t just a regular electrical toothbrush like a lot of options you see on the market. Whereas most electric toothbrushes only remove some of the plaque and bacteria, ION-Sei (which utilises Japanese technology and German design), has patented ionic technology which surpresses the bacteria that causes the plaque to begin with!

It does this with an Ultra Violet (UV) LED light that reacts to the Titanium Dioxide bar in the brush handle, to create ions that surpress the bacteria. The negative ions are then sent to your mouth via water or saliva.

It also works with your body’s natural electrical charge through a conductor on the handle to produce a weak charge that inhibits bacterial growth and attracts the bacteria from the teeth onto the brush.

In the long run, this reduces plaque build up which can lead to more problematic issues like gum disease and cavities.

(The technology used to create this is proprietory and patented which therefore makes it unique to ION-Sei and not something you would find in other electric toothbrushes).

This is so effective, ION-Sei can even be used with water only instead of toothpaste. (I personally don’t, only because I like having the taste of a minty fresh breath after cleaning but I love the fact that I don’t need to rely on the toothpaste itself to do a good job of cleaning).

How I use the ION-Sei?

My typical setting for this toothbrush is to have it on Deep (which is the strongest brush mode), with the standard brush head and I clean for 2 minutes. I occasionally use the Standard setting when it’s late at night when I’m trying to be quiet because on the strongest setting – Deep – the brush does vibrate louder (although still quieter than any other electric toothbrush I’ve used). My teeth and gums are quite resilient and not sensitive so I never use the Sensitive mode because it has a really soft, gentle action which isn’t powerful enough for my liking.

Soft brush head (thiner tapered bristles) vs Standard brush head (more like regular manual toothbrush bristles)

My boyfriend on the other hand has very sensitive gums and teeth and so he uses the Soft brush head with the tapered bristles and the Standard or Sensitive brush mode and this works really well for him. It really depends on what you prefer and what your teeth can handle so I would recommend playing around with the settings and brush heads until you figure out what you like.

My thoughts on ION-Sei

Since I’ve been using ION-Sei for almost a year now, I really can’t imagine myself using anything else. I absolutely love this toothbrush and am so grateful for Lisergy putting this on my radar.

The technology this toothbrush utilises is just genius in my opinion and I really appreciate the focus on prevention and inhibiting the growth of bacteria and plaque build up. In my opinion, prevention is key to having the best oral hygiene possible.

If anything happened to my current one, I wouldn’t hesitate to go out and replace it with another one. An issue I had with the Oral-B electric toothbrushes was that after 6 months or so, they would never fail to lose their charge quickly and require more frequent charging to maintain the battery.

ION-Sei’s charge lasts foreeever. I can go weeks without having to charge this up and I think in the 10 months since I’ve had it, it’s only been charged about 6 or 7 times and that’s with me AND my partner using it everyday together twice a day. There are also no signs of the battery getting weaker as yet.

Has a rubber cover to protect charge port from water when not in use
Charging base – approx 8 hours to charge battery from empty to full

I also really appreciate the rechargeable base. My Oral-B charger used to get so gunky with buildup but it was connected to the wire so you had to be careful when cleaning it. For ION-Sei, the toothbrush sits in the transparent plastic cover, which is removable from the rest of the charging base and can be cleaned so easily. It even has little side stands to put your tooth brush heads on when not in use. I love thoughtful designs like this which take into account everyday useability and convenience. (It is also surprisingly lightweight which makes it a great option to travel with).

I also greatly enjoy knowing how long I have brushed my teeth for. 2 minutes can seem so long when you do a mundane repetitive task every day but ION-Sei forces me to keep going when I want to stop because I’m waiting for it to auto shut off when it hits the 2 minute mark. Its a good displine thing for me and the 30 second interval pauses also encourage me to keep going that bit longer. It may sound silly, but little things like this are super helpful, especially if you have kids and are trying to encourage a good cleaning routine.

The only gripe I have with this is an issue I usually have with all electric toothbrushes. The brush head and the part of the toothbrush handle that connects to the brush does tend to get toothpaste and water build up over time. I always detach them both after brushing and give them a dry down to reduce water mould but as the stem of the brush head is transparent and you can’t easily reach inside it to clean, it eventually does turn yellowish and has toothpaste residue within it. (Not the biggest issue however, since you should be replacing your brush heads regularly anyway but something to just be aware of in terms of maintenance).

I have to say, when I first tried this toothbrush it took a period of getting used to because after having used round head electric brush heads for so long, this felt rather strange. I wasn’t keen on the long brush initially because I didn’t feel like I could get in the tight areas and hard to clean spots as easily, but you naturally adjust the way you brush to be able to get into those areas and it isn’t an issue for me anymore.

I absolutely love the fact that there are 3 brush modes and it comes with a couple different brush heads because it really caters to everyone and their teeth types. I’ve bought Oral-B electric toothbrushes for around the same price but the specs don’t even come close to measuring up to how versatile ION-Sei is.

Results:

After using this for close to a year, I can really say its helped reduce my plaque build up and has maintained my healthy gums and teeth. I don’t have major teeth or gum issues but because of the way my lower teeth are really close together and slightly overlap, I do get the white plaque build up over time when I miss the harder to reach areas (and also forget or get lazy to floss daily). However, I have noticed a general decrease inbetween my dental check ups of the amount of plaque I have that builds up and I can only attribute this to the ION-Sei. I still eat alot of sweets (far too much), and eat all the same kinds of foods so it is in part because of this amazing bacteria inhibiting technology and also because the design and functionality of this toothbrush just makes me brush my teeth more thoroughly and efficiently.

I also feel that my teeth feel much softer and smoother after brushing with ION-Sei than previously and I get in the habit of running my tongue over my teeth just to enjoy that feeling (as strange as that sounds)!

If you have ever had serious cavity or gum issues, I highly recommend you try ION-Sei and see the difference it makes in your oral health.

Charging base also makes a good storage base for the toothbrush heads

Overall, I love my ION-Sei and it has really changed my teeth cleaning routine and made it much more enjoyable. Its versatile in its modes and options, user-friendly, provides a gentle or deep clean action and really aids in reducing bacteria and plaque that can cause gum disease and other teeth issues. It is far more effective than other electric toothbrushes I’ve tried and I highly recommend this to anyone because you will not want to use anything else once you’ve tried this amazing piece of technology.

If you want to buy yourself an ION-Sei, it is available on Amazon for £129.99. Link here. It is also available at John Bell & Croyden and Harrods for the Christmas period.

What a lovely review. I enjoyed learning all about an electric toothbrush I’ve been thinking about getting next, once my Oral B Pro 1000 wears out.
